The country singer Ingrid Andress has sparked a wide discussion on social media after her performance of the national anthem of the United States (The Star-Spangled Banner) during a baseball game on Monday. In a post on her Instagram profile, the artist revealed that she was drunk during the performance and is checking into rehab to address her alcoholism.
“I won’t lie to you, I was drunk last night. Today, I am checking into a rehab clinic to seek the help I need. That wasn’t me last night. I apologize to the Baseball League, the fans, and to this country that I love, for that performance,” she wrote.
Amid the criticism, many fans and celebrities showed empathy towards the situation. Actress and singer Lucy Hale, known for her role in Pretty Little Liars, was one of those who expressed support.
Among the comments, one internet user pointed out that this is not an isolated case. In 2018, Fergie also faced harsh criticism for her rendition of the national anthem during the NBA All-Star game, where her performance received a negative reaction from the audience. Other artists, such as Roseanne Barr in July 1990, have also had anthem performances that were widely discussed and criticized.
