Despite suffering early eliminations this season, Palmeiras bet everything on the Brazilian Championship and secured a stunning 5-0 victory against Cuiabá. At Allianz Parque, the team was under pressure following disappointing results in the Copa do Brasil and Libertadores but managed to achieve a crucial win on Saturday (24/8) in the title race.
Following this result, Palmeiras remains in 3rd place in the Brazilian Championship, reaching 44 points. The significant victory helps the Sao Paulo team build an important goal difference in the title race. On the other hand, Cuiabá stands at the 19th position on the table, further sinking in the relegation battle.
Absolute Domination
In an impressive first half, Palmeiras scored four goals against Cuiabá within the first 45 minutes. The team equaled a record previously held by Dourado, achieving the most significant advantage in a first half of a game in the history of the Brasileirão.
Murilo opened the scoring for Alviverde after a mistake by Walter. Following that, Estêvão extended the lead with a penalty that Maurício won. Palmeiras’ young talent added a second goal of his own, the team’s third, after an individual play. In extra time, Maurício scored the fourth goal for Abel Ferreira’s squad.
No Mercy
Even with a monumental lead in the first half, Palmeiras did not ease off the gas and continued to dominate against the disorganized Cuiabá side. The team reached the fifth goal through Felipe Anderson after another brilliant individual play by Estêvão.
Alviverde maintained control of the game, and Cuiabá rarely posed a threat to the opponent’s goal. With the result safely in hand, Abel Ferreira’s team controlled the pace of the match and managed the score until the end of the game.
Atlético-GO Defeats Juventude
Playing at home, Atlético-GO secured an essential victory against Juventude in the battle to avoid the relegation zone. With a penalty goal in the final moments, Dragão defeated the southern team 2-1. Despite the triumph, the Goiás-based team remains at the bottom of the Brasileirão but equals Cuiabá’s points in 19th place. Juventude remains in the middle of the table.
