Barrocas to Take Action Against Large Animals Roaming the StreetsBarrocas, a municipality in the sisal region, will now be penalizing individuals who allow medium and large animals to roam freely in public areas, following the footsteps of Serrinha. The fine can reach up to R$ 1,500 and may also result in the loss of the right to reclaim the impounded animals. The animals in question include cattle, horses, goats, sheep, and pigs. Unlike in Serrinha, this measure does not authorize the slaughter of animals.
Published last Friday (28), the municipal decree justifies the action as a response to the “growing number of stray or abandoned animals on the streets,” causing disruptions and hindering the flow of pedestrian, cyclist, motorist, and motorcyclist traffic in both urban and rural areas of the municipality, as well as damaging public gardens and parks.
Signed by Mayor Almir de Maciel (PT), the measure also includes educational campaigns to raise awareness among the population about the importance of keeping animals in appropriate locations.
If the owner does not retrieve the impounded animals [within a week], they will be allocated for onerous donation, a type of donation where the recipient must provide a consideration in exchange for the received good, with proceeds going towards public policies related to animal welfare.
